James Milner was left seriously impressed by Harvey Elliott during a Liverpool training session.
The Reds returned for pre-season on Monday at the AXA Training Centre. They will remain at Kirkby before jetting to the Far East for friendlies against Manchester United and Crystal Palace next week.
And a fresh video posted by Liverpool’s official Twitter account shows a passage of play in a match at the training ground earlier this week. Milner plays a cross-field pass to Elliott, who controls the ball and performs a delicate chipped finish over the goalkeeper and into the net.
As the ball trickles over the line, Milner can be heard shouting “oh, yes please!” in response to Elliott’s sublime finish. Reds assistant manager Pep Lijnders can then be heard giving out instructions to the players for the next passage of play.
It was confirmed last week that Elliott will now wear the No.19 shirt, switching from the No.67. The number, which was previously worn by Sadio Mane, could be a sign that the 19-year-old may be handed more game time at Liverpool this season.
Explaining the change, Elliott told liverpoolfc.com : "Obviously the number became available, some great players have worn it in the past – the likes of Sadio and the list goes on. I think it was an opportunity to get down the ranks in terms of the numbers, and for me personally it's a wonderful number.
"I remember having a Sadio shirt with the number 19 on it as a kid. So to be able to wear it after him, it's a great pleasure. At the end of the day, a number is just a number, but it's just nice to have a lower number. I think it's a great opportunity going into another season.
"So, hopefully, I can prove to myself and prove to everyone that I'm able to have these kind of numbers and able to perform under this kind of pressure, because it comes with it. I'm just so excited to put this shirt on and get playing again."
