The idea was simple for MotoGP's 2027 regulations overhaul: Simpler, slower racers that were aimed at making the sport cheaper, safer, and with better wheel-to-wheel racing. And that concept was anchored in downsizing the engines from 1000cc to 850cc. All of which made sense, as while the racing in recent years has been amazing, it's been hard to follow, hard to pass, and the crashes have become much more potentially world-ending for the riders.
Everyone was hopeful that the new regulations then would level the playing field, and those same folks have been eagerly awaiting to see what's happened during the first few tests of the new machines. Would they be the fix everyone had hoped for? Unfortunately, it seems the opposite has possibly occurred.
