In 2020, popular Sydney influencer Jessica Stein (@TuulaVintage) suddenly stopped posting to Instagram, causing mass concern from her followers. Last night, the account has made its first post in over three years, but not by Jessica herself.
The caption, which was written by Jessica’s cousin Sara, gives a harrowing update on the influencer’s deteriorating health and is accompanied by several images in which she looks nearly unrecognisable from her previous posts.
Sara also references Jessica’s daughter Rumi, who has been battling an incredibly rare chromosome disorder since she was born in 2017.
While no official diagnosis statistics are available for Australia, the disease medically referred to as Mosaic Trisomy 2 affects fewer than 1,000 people in the USA, a country with a population of 331 million.
“Hi, I’m Jess’s cousin Sara. Jess and Rumi need help,” the caption begins.
“Jess and Rumi are both suffering from multiple complications of a connective tissue disorder they both share.
“Their family shares features of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, Marfan Syndrome and Brittle bone.
“After years of trying and failing to navigate the rigid health care system, they are having to turn to the community to help find them appropriate health care.
“Jess has also suffered enormous gaslighting by the health system for many years while trying to advocate for Rumi and herself.
“She was repeatedly told that the symptoms she was explaining were ‘physiologically impossible to survive’ and that “she wanted to have a sick child in hospital”.
“Jess had a traumatic injury happen while in hospital a few years ago, and was labelled hysteric.
“Instead of ordering a CT to clear an aortic dissection, her neurologist misdiagnosed her with conversion disorder, saying that she wasn’t coping with having a sick child.
“Jess was left alone, and in agony trying to get help in a system built against her.
“She now has major vascular congestion symptoms that leave her unable to lay down, with tearing chest pain and spitting up blood.
“She’s too tired to fight anymore. If anyone can help please reach out to Jess’s email at jessicamaystein@gmail.com, or go to the link in her bio for more information.”
Ever since Jessica stopped uploading to her social media profiles in January 2020, fans have frequently commented on her posts asking for an update on her situation.
After her cousin’s post, hundreds of Jessica’s followers sent their well-wishes in the comments section.
“We miss you Jess! Helping now and sending so much love,” wrote one.
“Omg! that’s not the update I was hoping for,” said another.
Formerly a travel creator, her Instagram bio now reads “Wanderer in a past life. Mum to the strongest, happiest human”.
Jessica is famously one of the first Aussies to make a living from brand partnerships and spon-cons.
Her account currently still sits at 1.9 million despite being inactive for over three years.
