Energy regulator Ofgem has offered advice on high gas and electricity bills - and has a service that could protect people from energy crisis blackouts being predicted by some in the winter.
Reports that households could face blackouts this winter under government plans to tackle the energy crisis have caused some concern. Media outlets have said officials believe the UK experiencing blackouts for several days in January is a “reasonable worst case scenario” if cold weather combines with gas shortages to leave the country short of power.
However, a Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy source said days of blackouts were unlikely to come to pass because of the UK’s “highly secure and diverse gas and electricity system”. They told The Guardian that the government prepares for “all and every eventuality” based on “made-up scenarios”. This would includes “reasonable worst case scenarios” such as blackouts.
