Offensive Linemen Brave Challenging Position Switches to Tackle Success

Detroit Lions offensive tackle Penei Sewell (58) and quarterback Jared Goff (16) run to running back Jahmyr Gibbs after his touchdown against the Denver Broncos, Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023, in Detroit.

In the chaotic and competitive world of the NFL, offensive linemen often find themselves facing unexpected challenges. While their role may seem straightforward to onlookers—block the opposing team and protect the quarterback—the reality is far more complex. And one of the most overlooked complexities lies in the transition from playing right tackle to left tackle, or vice versa.

Tristan Wirfs of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jonah Williams of the Cincinnati Bengals have recently made this daunting switch. Both players attest to the unique set of skills required to succeed in their new positions. Footwork, hand-eye coordination, and different techniques all come into play as they strive to keep fierce edge rushers at bay.

Wirfs, who had established himself as a first-team All-Pro at right tackle, describes the transition as one filled with awkwardness and frustration. Muscle memory developed over countless repetitions on one side suddenly becomes irrelevant, and a whole new set of movements must be learned. However, Wirfs credits his offensive line coach, Joe Gilbert, for providing invaluable guidance and ensuring his success. With time and practice, Wirfs is gradually finding his footing on the left side.

Williams, who played left tackle at Alabama and throughout his initial years with the Bengals, faced his own set of difficulties when shifting to the right side this season. Not only must players understand the necessary techniques intellectually, but they must also feel them instinctively. Williams emphasizes that ingrained technique, footwork, weight distribution, and overall coordination are crucial aspects that take considerable time and effort to master. Despite a previous knee surgery limiting his offseason preparation, Williams has steadily adapted to the challenges of his new position.

Penei Sewell of the Detroit Lions adds another layer of complexity to the discussion. After playing left tackle at Oregon and earning accolades as the nation’s best offensive lineman, Sewell initially moved to right tackle after being drafted by the Lions. However, circumstances led him to start at left tackle—making him the youngest player in NFL history to do so at the age of 20. Sewell acknowledges the differences in footwork and the need to train his body and mind differently for each position. The intricacies of hip movement and maintaining balance while protecting the quarterback make for a constant mental and physical challenge.

It's not just Wirfs, Williams, and Sewell who have faced these difficult transitions. Other linemen, such as Tyron Smith of the Dallas Cowboys, Austin Jackson of the Miami Dolphins, and many others, have experienced the same hurdles. The demands of the game require versatility and adaptability from these unsung heroes of the gridiron.

As fans, it's easy to overlook the complexities faced by offensive linemen. We often generalize their responsibilities and assume they all perform the same tasks. However, the truth is far more intricate. Each player on the line faces unique responsibilities and must make significant adjustments when required to switch positions. Their success hinges on continuous learning, repetition, and the guidance of skilled coaches.

So, the next time you watch an NFL game, take a moment to appreciate the unseen battles happening in the trenches. The offensive linemen are not just brute force; they are artists in their own right, constantly adapting their techniques to succeed in a game that demands both physical prowess and mental agility.
