Odessa A’zion Says ‘Fuck That I’m Out’ To A24 Film Following Whitewashing Concerns

I Love LA and Marty Supreme star Odessa A’zion has officially dropped out of A24’s Deep Cuts amid concerns over whitewashing.

Earlier this week, Odessa was embroiled in controversy after it was announced that she’d been cast in the movie adaptation of Holly Brickley‘s novel, Deep Cuts, which is set to be directed by Sean Durkin.

While the star has received praise from audiences for her recent performances in I Love LA and Marty Supreme, fans accused the star of whitewashing as she was cast to play Zoe Gutierrez, a character who’s half Mexican and Jewish in the novel.

Taking to her Instagram Stories on Thursday (local time), the star expressed that she’s listened to the public’s feedback to her casting, which resulted in her simply saying, “fuck that. I’m OUT”.

“Guys!! I am with all of you and I am NOT doing this movie,” she wrote on one slide.

“THANK YOU guys for bringing this to my attention. I AGREE WITH EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU! This is why I love you guys.”

In another slide, Odessa shared a glimpse into how she got the role and why she accepted it in the first place, admitting that she hadn’t read Brickley’s novel ahead of her audition.

“It is SO important for me to let you in on how it all went down: I went in for Percy, but was offered Zoe instead and instantly said yes! I’m so pissed y’all, I hadn’t read the book and should have paid more attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting,” she wrote before repeating “Fuck that! I’M OUT”.

“I’d never take a role from someone else that’s meant to do it,” she continued.

“That SHOULD do it! That’s not me. There are a plentitude of people more than capable of playing this role, and I am NOT one of them. I can’t wait to see who it ends up being.”

Furthermore, the actress expressed that she was just so excited to have booked the role as she “loved the story” and her fellow castmates.

“But fuck thatttt, y’all never again,” she wrote.

“I’ve been so busy with other work, I was trying to carve out a time to re-read, I wish I found that time sooner and clocked her name,” Odessa continued.

“That’s all that’s mentioned in the script when I just finally did.”

Odessa closed her series of IG stories, thanking fans for calling her out and expressing that she just can’t play the part knowing what she knows now.

“Still haven’t read the book, but the story in the script is focused on Percy and Joe, so of course, on my initial read, that was my main focus as well,” she wrote.

“I was happy to be invovled as a different role, but I just can not do it knowing more about Zoe now. I love you guys sleep tight.”

Per The Wrap, which broke the news on Odessa’s casting in Deep Cuts, production has yet begin for the A24 film.

According to the publication, Deep Cuts is a love story set in the 2000s that follows “two music-obsessed twenty-somethings navigating the messy realities of ambition, belonging and adulthood over the course of an era-defining decade”.

The movie is set to star Cailee Spaeny and Drew Starkey, who’s rumoured to be Odessa’s IRL boyfriend.

Odessa’s replacement has yet to be announced.
