Oakland, California, police investigated a run of shootings across the city late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, including a killing in the city’s Chinatown district and several shootings in East Oakland that left five people injured.
The bloodshed marked the second straight night of heightened violence in the city, coming a day after two men and a woman were fatally shot in East Oakland within a three-hour stretch on Friday night. No arrests have been announced in any of the shootings, which do not appear to be related, authorities said.
The city’s fourth homicide in two nights came about 1:20 a.m. Sunday, when a 44-year-old man was shot in the 700 block of Webster Street in Oakland’s Chinatown district. The man was taken to a hospital, where he died about five hours later, authorities said.
No motive has been determined for the shooting, which marks the 17th death investigated as a homicide by Oakland police this year. At this same time last year, police had investigated 16 homicides across the city.
The killing early Sunday morning happened amid a spate of shootings overnight across East Oakland that left five other people wounded, one of them critically.
The violence began shortly before 10 p.m. when two men were shot while riding in a car in the 2300 block of 35th Avenue in East Oakland, according to police. Someone in another vehicle opened fire at them as they rolled down the block — leaving the men, ages 25 and 26, with gunshot wounds to their hands.
A few minutes before midnight, another drive-by shooting left a 54-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds in the 8500 block of International Boulevard, Oakland police said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition early Sunday morning.
Slightly more than an hour later, a 54-year-old woman at a taco food truck in the 4200 block of International Boulevard was shot by someone who opened fire from a nearby car, according to police. The woman suffered a gunshot wound to her hand.
The violence came to an end at about 2:55 a.m. when a 26-year-old man was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the 7800 block of Bancroft Avenue. He was taken to a hospital, and he is expected to survive, authorities said.

The spate of shootings came as California Highway Patrol officers investigated another fatal shooting early Sunday morning on an off-ramp from Interstate 580 in East Oakland.
A woman was found fatally shot about 1:50 a.m. on the Edwards Avenue exit, marking the first homicide of the year investigated by the agency within Oakland city limits. Last year, highway patrol officers investigated six homicides on freeways in Oakland.
