New York City police officers gathered at a Queens courthouse to show solidarity for their fallen NYPD brother, Officer Jonathan Diller, during the arraignment of Lindy Jones in connection to Diller's shooting death. Jones and Guy Rivera were indicted earlier this month for their involvement in the tragic incident that occurred in Far Rockaway in late March.
Approximately 100 NYPD officers filled the hallways and pews of the courthouse, awaiting Jones' arrival. Jones, accompanied by his attorney, was surrounded by court officers as he entered the courtroom. His attorney emphasized his client's presumption of innocence before the judge.
Rivera, suspected of fatally shooting Officer Diller during a traffic stop, was indicted for first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder for aiming his weapon at an NYPD sergeant. Both Rivera and Jones faced charges of criminal possession of a weapon after a second firearm was discovered in their vehicle.
Jones, arraigned on Tuesday, was indicted on multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon. During questioning, Jones claimed to be the driver and denied involvement in the shooting, suggesting that surveillance footage would support his innocence. He expressed surprise at the turn of events and questioned the need for a search of his vehicle.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz motioned for Jones' remand, citing him as a flight risk due to previous gun possession charges. Jones reportedly admitted in court to having a history of shooting people, further raising concerns about his potential danger.
The incident leading to Officer Diller's death occurred on March 25 when Diller observed Rivera carrying a gun. Subsequent interactions with the suspects led to a confrontation, during which Diller and other officers approached the suspects' vehicle.
The presence of NYPD officers at the courthouse underscored the unity and support within the law enforcement community as justice is sought for Officer Diller and his family.
