All aspects of the New York City transit system are operating safely following this morning’s earthquake, as confirmed by the Metropolitan Transport Authority (MTA). MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber stated that every part of the transit system functioned safely during the earthquake.
Initial facility inspections have been completed, including assessments of the seven bridges operated by the MTA. Lieber emphasized that these structures were designed to withstand much stronger seismic impacts than what was experienced today.
The MTA Bridges and Tunnels (B&T) division, as per the MTA website, serves over 900,000 vehicles on an average day. In 2019, it handled more traffic than any other bridge and tunnel authority in the nation, with over 329 million vehicles passing through.
Lieber directed MTA frontline staff to report any abnormalities in the system, but as of now, no issues have been flagged.
