As wedding and holiday seasons get underway, many brides and grooms-to-be, as well as holidaymakers, are trying to shed dozens of pounds to feel empowered to be their best selves. However, Nutritionist Mark Gilbert is warning people not to fall into common traps perpetuated by well-known myths and instead use research-approved methods to lose weight safely.
Mark busts five common myths when trying to lose a significant amount of weight in a short period of time.
Going on a big holiday, attending a reunion party and other milestone events often see people wanting to feel their best. By taking on board Mark’s tips, they can lose weight the right way without falling into common traps built on everyday misconceptions.
- Myth #1 Exercise is more important than dieting: While many consider hitting the treadmills to be an easy way to lose weight, Mark notes that “even the best studies on gym-focused weight loss only result in an average of about 5 pounds lost”. Whilst exercise is important, he suggests that dieting is a far more effective way to lose weight quickly, but safely.
- Myth #2 The ‘carnivore diet’ is the best way to lose weight: Eating lots of protein (eggs, dairy, and meat) along with drinking water is proven to be the fastest way to lose weight. However, the so-called ‘carnivore diet’ has not been well studied and could result in nutritional deficiencies. Instead, using protein as the centre of every meal but balancing it with mostly non-starchy vegetables is the optimal way to lose weight while ensuring your body has all the nutrients it needs. The 1:1 Diet includes high-quality protein as the core of every meal alongside a reasonable serving of veggies and, as you progress through the diet, the addition of some fruit and starches.
- Myth #3 Weight loss drugs and surgeries speed up the weight loss process: Drugs and surgery as a tool to lose weight require careful, expert nutrition advice throughout due to the large decrease in calorie intake. This is time-consuming and requires significant dedication from the dieter. By contrast, products specifically designed for weight loss such as those on the 1:1 Diet Plan are made to provide all the dieter’s required nutrients, despite their low calories. As meal replacements, they slot seamlessly into your day and are fast acting to boot.
- Myth #4 Losing weight so quickly can result in ‘rebound weight’ There used to be concerns that rapid weight loss was unhealthy or would result in ‘rebound weight gain’ shortly after. Mark notes that top experts such as Oxford University’s Professor Susan Jebb no longer believe this. Jebb, who is also Chair of the UK Food Standards Agency, concluded that “the common claim that more rapid initial weight loss is associated with more rapid regain is false […] the rapid weight loss group were more likely to achieve their target weight loss”.
- Myth #5 Plan diets are laborious and slow: Plan diets such as the 1:1 Diet are proven to be the simplest, easiest, and overall quickest way to lose weight. The diets’ lower steps cultivate rapid weight loss through mild ketosis, whilst still providing all the dieter’s daily essential nutritional requirements. The mild ketosis also has the advantage of reducing hunger. In fact, data from the DROPLET study even showed that the diet reduces the risk of cardiometabolic diseases like heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and liver disease.
The 1:1 Diet is built on research and guidance from experts like Mark, ensuring dieters achieve weight loss goals in the most efficient, scientifically-supported way.
