Nursing reunion for East Kilbride hospital's 'Class of 72'

The Hairmyres Hospital 'Class of 72' nursing contingent reminisced at a special anniversary reunion recently.

Some eight members of the group who began their nursing training 50 years ago met for a lunch and shared tales of high-jinks and memories from their days at the old Hairmyres.

Having held a similar event for the 25th anniversary, two of the class, Liz Whitely and Anne Reynolds, talked about organising a get-together to mark 50 years.

And after a bit of digging they manged to hold a lunch at Roccas in Hamilton.

Liz, 67, who grew up and lived in East Kilbride before moving to Nottinghamshire in 2008, told Lanarkshire Live: "We started our nursing studies 50 years ago in Hairmyres and we wanted to get together to share our life experiences since we qualified.

"I started doing a bit of digging on Facebook, found some folk and also managed to get addresses and emails to contact them. There were a couple of people who myself and Anne had stayed in touch with over the years too as well.

"We had lunch in Roccas in Hamilton and although we had a few missing, who were either deceased, living abroad or unable to join us, we had an amazing day. It seemed like we’d only parted a week ago instead of 50 years.

"There were plenty of tales to tell and memories we all had. There was no doubt we had plenty of laughs as well as working hard. I was just 17 and a half when I went into nursing.

"We had to get a late pass to be out after 9pm and the late pass was until 11. So we would come back into the nurses accommodation and then sneak back out one of the windows.

"And the nurses and doctors would take in in turn to 'raid' each other's accommodation. It was great to share all these memories and more."

Liz went into midwifery and general nursing, working in the field for 18 years, before becoming a medical rep.

She added: "It's ironic really, I sold the beds into the 'new' Hairmyres Hospital which is there now after training in the old Hairmyres Hospital years before."
