A nurse is in a critical condition in hospital after catching flu and undergoing emergency open heart surgery.
Kate Thomas was put into a coma after a scan revealed the infection had attacked her heart. The 33-year-old, who is a nurse at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool, first fell ill with cold symptoms about two weeks ago.
According to her mum, Alison, she had a cold and a cough but her symptoms eased after a week. They worsened last week and Kate was taken to hospital, where she was moved to intensive care.
