Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are currently at the site of a tragic bus crash in Bovina, Mississippi. The incident resulted in the loss of seven lives and left dozens of others injured. The NTSB is focusing its inquiry on the maintenance of the bus tires, as initial reports suggest that tire failure may have been a contributing factor to the crash.
The fatal accident occurred early Saturday morning on Interstate 20 in Warren County. The 2018 Volvo bus, which was en route from Atlanta to Dallas, veered off the road and overturned without involving any other vehicles. Tragically, six individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, while another victim succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. Additionally, thirty-six passengers were transported to hospitals for treatment, although their current conditions remain unknown.
Among the deceased were a 6-year-old boy and his 16-year-old sister, as confirmed by Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey. Efforts are underway to identify the remaining victims. The bus, operated by Autobuses Regiomontanos, was carrying 41 passengers and two drivers at the time of the crash.
NTSB member Todd Inman stated that the investigation will encompass an evaluation of the carrier's safety record and the protective measures in place for bus occupants. Autobuses Regiomontanos, a company with two decades of experience in offering cross-border trips between Mexico and the U.S., has emphasized its commitment to maintaining a modern fleet of buses through daily maintenance routines. The company's website advertises discounted trips for workers among its services.
