Kate Garraway says NTA nomination is 'bittersweet' as Derek is 'incredibly' fighting on

Kate Garraway has said being nominated for a National Television Award for her documentary about her family life as her husband battles the long-term effects of Covid was 'bittersweet'.

The Good Morning Britain presenter is in contention for a second year in a row in the authored documentary category, having picked up the award last year.

Last year she won for the first programme about her family's life after her husband, former political adviser Derek Draper, spent a year in hospital being treated for coronavirus.

Reflecting on how she felt to be nominated, she told the PA news agency on the red carpet: "It's bittersweet, because you wouldn't really want to be in a position to be making that documentary because it wouldn't be a situation that you would choose.

"However, there were many nights when we feared Derek will be taken from us completely. So the fact that he fights on so incredibly, and we have the chance to care for him, is a fantastic thing.

"And to have the opportunity to celebrate the amazing work carers do, the professional carers, the millions of unpaid carers all across the country that are looking after loved ones, I think is a fantastic thing."

The TV presenter added that her husband has helped her through difficult times as she finds him "inspiring", and the support of the nation has also lifted her.

Kate was supported by her teenage daughter Darcey on the red carpet at the National Television Awards, after revealing she's fighting to get her husband Derek home from hospital, after he developed sepsis.

The Good Morning Britain presenter is hoping her documentary, Caring for Derek, will scoop an award tonight after she attends the ceremony with her 16-year-old daughter, after issuing an update on her husband's condition earlier this week.

The pair smiled for the camera, as the mum-of-two wore a silver wrap dress while the teenager wore a floor length red number.

Former political lobbyist Derek, 55, was rushed to hospital after developing the life-threatening infection earlier this year - two years after his body was ravaged by coronavirus.

Kate has been sharing insights into her daily juggling of life on TV and being a carer for her husband, as he fights to improve his health.

Giving an update on his health battle, Kate revealed there has been a setback and has been staying at the hospital.

"Derek is back in hospital after developing sepsis that again threatened his life and we are again fighting to get him home," the 55-year-old said.

Of being a carer, she wrote for The Sun : "We all clapped for carers with vigour during the pandemic because they were saving lives right before our very eyes,

"But the trouble is, when the direct fear of life-or-death passes his celebration gets quickly forgotten, but the caring goes on.

"It’s not sexy or the stuff of movies, like pulling someone from a burning building or giving mouth to mouth, but it’s no less vital to life."

Tonight, Kate faces competition from Katie Price, Julia Bradbury, the late Tom Parker and Paddy and Christine McGuinness.

The 2022 NTAs were originally due to take place on September 15 but were put on hold as a mark of respect following the death of the Queen.

The NTA's are always a special moment in the showbiz industry, but this year's awards are particularly meaningful due to the collection of poignant documentaries, soap storylines, and drama series that 2022 had to offer.

After a hugely exciting year of TV – which included the most-watched series of Love Island, the final series of Peaky Blinders, and some eye-opening documentaries from stars including Tom Parker's wife Kelsey Parker, and Katie Price - the most famous faces on TV have made up for lost time as they dressed to impress for the exciting night ahead.

Overall, there are 65 nominees in 16 categories, including the brand new Expert category which includes nominees Martin Lewis, the Money Saving Expert, as well as Kaleb Cooper from Clarkson's Farm.
