Viewers of the National Television Awards couldn't help but 'cringe' as Love Island star Gemma Owen and her former footballer dad Michael took to the stage. The father-and-daughter duo presented the gong for Serial Drama Performance at the glam ceremony on Thursday evening (October 13).
Gemma, 19, dazzled in an eye-catching nude-coloured gown complete with plenty of intricate bead detailing with long sleeves that dropped off the shoulders. She teamed the heavily embellished gown with a delicate necklace while she tucked her shiny dark locks behind her ears so her tresses could flow down her back.
Michael, meanwhile, opted for a classic black suit and tie which he paired with a pair of shiny smart shoes with the pair hitting the red carpet before taking to the stage to give out one of the all-important awards.
After saying the names of each of the four nominees as clips of their work were shown on screen, it was time to announce the winner. But as the camera came back to the father-daughter duo there was a pause where they didn't say anything for a very awkward few seconds.
Former Liverpool and Manchester United star Michael was then heard muttering 'open it' to Gemma as she held onto the envelope with the winner inside. She did then eventually read out the name of the winner, which was Mark Charnock who won the gong for his role as Marlon Dingle in Emmerdale.
But the awkward on-screen moment didn't pass viewers watching the NTA's ceremony live on ITV by and they flocked to social media to comment.
@Scotthopper1 fumed: "Does she really need to be given instructions to open a f*****g envelope #ntas2022 #NTAs." @PaigeyEFC commented: "Watching Michael and Gemma Owen present that award was painful 'open it, open it' #NTAs." @xhenlisa posted: "Not seen a more awkward father daughter duo on tv than Michael and Gemma Owen #NTAs." @Shel_33x added: "Michael and Gemma Owen a bit awks #NTAs."
