NTA viewers confused as Emmerdale's Danny Miller takes 'nasty' swipe at Stephen Mulhern

Viewers of the National Television Awards were confused as Danny Miller jokingly took a swipe at Stephen Mulhern.

Stars from the world of showbiz gathered for the glitzy ceremony at the Ovo Arena, Wembley last night. The Emmerdale actor got up on stage to collect the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment award after I'm A Celebrity won the prize.

The reigning King of the Castle accepted the award on behalf of Ant and Dec, who were unable to attend after they tested positive for coronavirus. However, fans were baffled when he referenced the In for a Penny host in his speech.

He said: "Just on behalf of Ant and Dec who unfortunately have covid so they can't be here tonight, and Stephen Mulhern is in the crowd so not sure why he hasn't accepted the award on behalf of them." The camera panned to show Stephen, who pulled a confused face in response to the comment.

Fans following the ceremony on Twitter branded the remark "unnecessary".

Lins said: "Um....Stephen Mulhern has nothing to do with I'm a Celebrity, that's why he didn't collect the award!!"

Polly commented: "Not Danny Miller throwing shade at our Stephen"

Becky posted: "what was that dig at Stephen Mulhern about? He obviously didn't come and accept the award on their behalf because he's got nothing to do with I'm a Celeb? Seems an unnecessary comment by Danny.."

Gillian tweeted: "What was all that about??! Even Stephen Mulhern looked puzzled??"

Polly posted: "I really don't think Danny was having a dig at Stephen. Just a clumsy comment"

Stephen later accepted the award for Ant and Dec when they won the TV presenter prize for the 21st year in a row.
