NPR secures record $80m donation from billionaire philanthropist after federal cuts

  • NPR has received its largest-ever donation from a living donor, with billionaire philanthropist Connie Ballmer contributing $80 million.
  • Ballmer, a former NPR Foundation board member, said that her donation was to support fact-based and local journalism, emphasizing the importance of an informed public for democracy.
  • An additional $33m was donated anonymously, bringing NPR’s total new funding to $113m.
  • In 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order ending federal funding for public TV and radio organizations.
  • NPR's CEO, Katherine Maher, said that the gifts would help the organization become more sustainable and prepare its network and member stations for the next 50 years.
