Novak Djokovic loses in opening round of US Open for first time

  • Novak Djokovic suffered his first opening-round exit at a Grand Slam tournament since 2006 after losing to Argentina's Mariano Navone at the US Open.
  • The 24-time major champion lost 7-6 (5) 5-7 4-6 6-2 6-1 in a five-set match lasting four hours and 36 minutes while suffering from vomiting, severe cramping, and body pain.
  • Djokovic admitted after the match that he carries a serious health issue and "despised every moment" on court, though he congratulated world number 49 Navone on the biggest win of his career.
  • The defeat is the 39-year-old’s earliest exit at a major since his defeat by Paul Goldstein at the 2006 Australian Open. He had never lost in the first round at the U.S. Open.
  • In the late match on Arthur Ashe Stadium, 46-year-old former champion Venus Williams squandered seven set points in the second set before losing 6-2 7-6 (6) to Sofia Kenin.
