Novak Djokovic claims 'food poisoning' ahead of 2022 Australian Open

MELBOURNE: Novak Djokovic's shocking claim of being poisoned at a Melbourne hotel in January 2022, where he was detained after arriving in Australia without taking the Covid-19 vaccination, came to light on Friday.

In a recent interview the 37-year-old Serb said he was served food contaminated with high levels of lead and mercury.

Djokovic, who had his visa revoked and was deported from the country, made the sensational claims in an interview to GQ magazine. The Serb said some of the food he received contained lead and mercury.

"I had some health issues, and I realized that in that hotel in Melbourne, I was fed with some food that poisoned me," the 24-time major winner said. "I had some discoveries when I came back to Serbia. I never told this to anybody publicly, but I had a high level of heavy metal. I had a very high level of lead and mercury."

When asked if he had evidence to link the heavy metal blood levels to food served in the hotel, Djokovic said, "The GQ article came out online yesterday (Thursday), I think it's a February issue, so it's coming out in print version. I've done that interview many months ago. I would appreciate not talking more in detail about that, as I would like to focus on the tennis and why I'm here."

Djokovic added, "If you want to see what I've said and get more information on that, you can always revert to the article."

Djokovic received support from the outspoken Aussie Nick Kyrgios, who said, "I haven't spoken to him (Djokovic), I didn't even know that. We treated him like s#*t, that's for sure."
