Quiz: name a rubbish Richard Linklater film. OK, there was Bad News Bears, but that’s it. The rest (Boyhood, Dazed and Confused, Blue Moon, the Before… trilogy etc) are all perfectly crafted joys.
But how very dare he (an American) decide to take on one of the sacred cows of French cinema and milk it for all the fun it’s worth. And how effronté to then totally pull off a film about the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s À Bout de Souffle (Breathless), the foundation stone of New Wave cinema that changed movies forever.
