Nottinghamshire school issues statement after travellers moved onto playing field

A Nottinghamshire school has issued a statement after travellers moved onto its playing field. Chilwell School on Queens Road West, said a gate padlock had been broken before travellers moved onto the field on Sunday, June 18.

A representative explained it had hoped to serve an eviction notice and move the vehicles away by Tuesday, June 20 but the travellers left the site before being evicted. On Sunday, the school stated: "Today the school has become aware of a group of vehicles that have gained access to the field after the access gate has been compromised by the padlock being broken by persons unknown."

In a later update, it added: "The vehicles have been removed, the site is now clear and secured with security onsite to prevent any further access. Thank you to the police for their quick response and the Chilwell community for bringing this to our attention."

The school had to serve an eviction notice after an "encampment" was set up on its field in August last year. August 5 after eviction papers were served the day before. Another group in 2012 left a burning caravan behind after moving off the school's field.

Last year the school said it had cost time and money to move the travellers on, but that it was committed to keeping the field open for the public to use. This was echoed in a statement over the most recent incident, with a representative adding: "The school remains committed to ensuring that we are a community service provider and we do not want to seal off access to our extensive playing fields."
