Nottinghamshire park goers say travellers 'didn't disturb them' after pitching up on 'popular' site

Park goers in Stapleford say travellers ‘didn’t disturb them’ and ‘cleaned up’ after being pitched up on the site. Last week a group of travellers pitched up at the Pastures Road Recreation ground, in Stapleford, with a number of caravans and vehicles spotted on the site.

At least seven caravans were spotted on the field in Stapleford on Friday (July 7). According to park goers, they left the site around Saturday (July 8) afternoon.

75-year-old Jennifer Fretwell often walks in the park with her two dogs, Suzy and Sid. Jennifer was aware of the travellers and said she saw a number of them pack up on Saturday.

She said: “It might have been the next day, they were packing up . There were only four or five vans there. I was walking the dogs a couple of times, most of them had gone.

“Personally they didn’t disturb me. It is a popular park, there’s always children in the play area, dog walkers and people jogging for their health. It’s a popular park.

“The kids come to play football, there’s a football club, Pegasus. To me it didn’t look like they left a lot of mess.

“They put things in carrier bags and were cleaning up the mess. I think that was on saturday.”

The Pastures Road site also has a pavilion and two senior football pitches. It also includes a mini football pitch and play area.

Another park goer, Alan Walker, said:“I wasn’t aware they were here to be honest- I didn’t know. It is a nice park, a lot of people do tend to come on here when it’s warm. I think it’s definitely popular amongst dog walkers, people are really friendly here.

“I know that there were some travellers at a school in Chilwell maybe last week or the week before, they seem to get on there often. I hadn’t heard anything about them being on here.”

A dog walker, who wished to remain anonymous added that they saw the travellers. They said: “I forgot what day it was but I definitely saw them parked up. They weren’t a problem for me, I just mind my own business walking my dog.

“It’s a really well kept park, it would have been a shame if they left it a mess, by the sound of it they weren't here for very long.”
