Nottinghamshire neighbours love living near the city and countryside as development progresses

Neighbours who live on a fast growing development in Gedling borough have shared how they love having the best of both worlds living between the city and countryside. As the Rivendell development at Teal Close progresses with the second phase of house building currently underway, residents have spoken out about how the community has shaped up.

The site, which is situated off Colwick Loop Road between Netherfield and Stoke Bardolph, will eventually be occupied by around 800 new homes along with a hotel, a pub, playing pitches and changing facilities, public open space and allotments.

So far a number of residents have moved into their properties over the last couple of years, and a primary school and a care home have been completed, as well as a brand new Aldi and a Bird's Bakery which have opened on the site. In 2022, it was reported that neighbours had "no complaints" that more homes were being added to the development and that seems to still be the case.

David and Donna Wilson moved to Teal Close six months ago. Mr Wilson said: “We love it. The estate is really nice. We’d like to get a new pub. We love the Bird's, we love Aldi. We do need a bus service though, we are really in need of a bus service. You have to go to the park and ride or walk down to the Victoria retail park. That's a problem with the bus service but other than that it’s nice. It’s a great place for families.”

Donna added: “You know you're in the city but it's like you're in the countryside as well. It’s a nice community.”

Another resident Tiffany Martin, who runs a pub, moved to the new development three years ago. She spoke on how she thinks plans for the development to have a pub would be positive. The 35-year-old said: “I think it would be a chance for people to meet each other. It’s always good to have a pub around the corner.

“It’s a nice place to live, it’s close enough to everything and everyone seems nice.”

Carrie Ball, 34, said: “I love it here - everyone is very welcoming. I think it’s a lovely little area. You’ve got the retail park, the Bird's and the Aldi which is nice. Also we’re not far from the city centre which is a bonus. I just love it, we are really happy here. It’s nice that it’s growing and will continue to grow."

So far, 342 residents have moved on to the estate. The development opened in 2018 and will have approximately 830 homes in total over a 10-year timescale.

As reported earlier this week, developer Persimmon Homes has amended its plans for part of the third phase of the major housing scheme after a water pipe was discovered under a section of the land. Amendments to the plans will affect the design and location of 16 homes on part of the scheme.

Gedling Borough Council’s planning committee approved the changes earlier this week. A Gedling Borough Council spokesperson said: "A proposal to build 16 homes on land off Teal Close was approved by the council’s planning committee on February 22.

"The homes had previously been granted permission as part of a larger application at the site, but following the discovery of underground pipes at the location, construction was not possible and an alternative layout was put forward. The proposals form part of the wider development of 808 homes at Teal Close, a 26 hectare site close to the Colwick Loop Road."
