A takeaway on the sofa or a home-cooked meal always goes down a treat but if you’re fancying taking your mum or mother figure out for Mother’s Day this year, community reporter Keimae Blake has found what she believes to be the perfect tea room - and it won’t break the bank...
For many, Mother’s Day is a celebration but it can be a hard day for others too, so, whatever your situation, I hope the day treats you as well as it can. Down a quiet city centre alleyway in Hounds Gate, in the city centre, is Biscuits and Brew.
The beautifully decorated tea room is perfect for a Mother’s Day treat but, of course, it's also an ideal spot to come to on an ordinary day, too. With flower chains draped over furniture and hanging from the ceiling, Biscuits and Brew looks like something out of a fairy tale.

Quaint, small and elegant - the tea toom has a lengthy menu so whether you’ve got 20 minutes to spare or longer, there’s plenty of lunch favourites on offer. On arrival at Biscuits and Brew, there was only one other customer sitting down reading the newspaper.
After being seated and given a menu, I read the blends of tea in awe; there’s a Jaffa Cake blend, Pear and Pistachio, Watermelon Sugar, Banana Fudge, Cherry Bakewell and more. Uncreatively, I settled for a pot of English Breakfast tea. Served in a cast iron teapot that comes with a filter, the fresh and earthy smell of tea hit me as I poured it in my mug.
Sipping as I browsed through the menu, many dishes popped out to me: eggs benedict for £8.25, maple bacon banana bread for £8.55 and avocado and egg for £8.25.
Settling with the Tuna Tuna toastie for £7.95 - which consists of tuna mayonnaise with red onion, cheddar cheese, dDijon mustard, salad and crisps on the side - it was definitely the right choice. With a generous amount of tuna and stringy cheese pressed in between toasted bread, the crunchy salad of the side was the perfect finishing touch.
With an appetising set of cakes on display, I finished off my lunch with an Oreo Brookie (brownie and a cookie) for £3.95. The thick, rich and fudgy dessert was delightful with chunks of Oreo lodged into it and a chocolate-y sauce drizzled onto my plate. I couldn’t finish it all but look the rest away with me, I couldn’t let something so scrummy go to waste!
Although Biscuits and Brew might be small, there’s definitely a lot packed into this tea room: sweet treats, 10/10 toasties and picturesque interior.
