Nottingham shoppers aren't surprised after shoe shop announces closure

Nottingham shoppers say they aren’t surprised after a shoe store in the city centre announced its closure. Clarks on Wheeler Gate has shut its doors for good.

The shop, now empty, has a sign that reads: “This isn’t goodbye, thank you for shopping with us.” It then lists other Clarks outlets nearby.

Shoppers have said that the closure doesn’t surprise them as Clarks has another store nearby in Long Row. Software engineer Chris Hoptkins, 35, from West Bridgford, said: “I hope the sales assistants are sent to other stores and their jobs are safe but it isn’t surprising really.

“The other Clarks is pretty much in the Market Square for everyone who’s getting off the buses or walking around. They’re more likely to go to that one.”

Chris added: “I personally didn’t use it but for those who did at least there’s another store a walk away.”

With a to-rent sign visible on top of the shop - which had been there for at least 15 years - other people voiced their opinion on the its closure. Tammy Bolton, 35, is from Clifton.

Tammy, who is a full-time mum, said: “I’m surprised it’s lasted so long. It’s a shame to see another shop closing down but there’s a Clarks less than five minutes away.”

Tammy added: “The shop will probably turn into a cafe, restaurant or clothes shop. I only use this part of town to get to the train station or Marks and Spencer. If I was starting a business, I wouldn’t choose here as a location.”

Receptionist Anna Green, 49, from Sneinton, said: “I’ve only come here when the other Clarks haven't had what I’ve wanted in stock. I think 15 years is a long time to survive in town but I’m sure it’s been sad for the staff who may have worked there since it opened.

“I don’t go to Clarks all the time but luckily there’s another one so it isn’t too bad.”
