Nottingham's parks are named best in country outside London

Nottingham has some of the best parks in the UK as the city has been awarded the most Green Flag awards for anywhere outside of London. The city has been given 71 flags which is an international quality mark for parks and green spaces.

Environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy has also recognised 41 Nottingham parks as being among the very best in the UK. The city has been given 22 Community Awards including for Hedley Villas in New Basford.

Nottingham has also gained four University Green Flags and one Canals and Rivers Trust Green Flag. The Arboretum, the Forest Recreation Ground, Highfields Park and Wollaton Park have maintained their Green Heritage Site Accreditation, supported by Historic England, for the management of their historic features.

Councillor Audra Wynter, Portfolio Holder for Highways, Transport and Parks, said: “We are delighted to have yet again been recognised by these Green Flag Awards this year from Keep Britain Tidy. This Award recognises and highlights the value we put on our parks and green spaces, they are such an important part of people’s lives and well-being in Nottingham.

“It’s fantastic that Nottingham City Council’s investment in parks has been recognised with these accolades and we will soon be announcing our Nottingham Green Space Strategy which means we can look forward to an even greener, healthier, happier Nottingham.

“We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors, and this award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining our parks and open spaces to such a high standard.” The Green Flag Award scheme recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces.

Gedling Borough Council have been awarded five Green Flags for Gedling Country Park, Arnot Hill Park, Burton Road Jubilee Park and Bestwood Country Park. Breck Hill Park was given the award for the first time after it has received £100,000 last year for a new children's play area.

Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John Clarke said: “We are very pleased to see that four has now turned into a fabulous five as we celebrate the addition of Breck Hill Park to our prestigious list of Green Flag parks in the borough. Our parks are incredibly valuable to our communities and these awards recognise their importance and how the council and communities work together to improve them year on year and provide spaces that improve people’s health and wellbeing.

"We work very hard every year to meet the standards and criteria set by the awards so I would like to thank our hard working parks and open spaces staff and the Friends of Groups for their dedication. We know residents of Gedling are very proud of our parks, and this achievement goes to show what wonderful spaces we have in the borough.”
