Nottingham reacts to Will Smith slap at the Oscars ceremony

Actor Will Smith lashed out at last night's Oscars ceremony after Chris Rock made a joke at the expense of the star's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. The much publicised event has overshadowed the awards event.

Jada has previously spoken publicly about her struggle with hair loss and alopecia and Rock referred to her short haircut saying “Jada, can’t wait for GI Jane 2". Smith took to the stage and appeared to slap Rock. Nottingham fans have been quick to offer their opinions on the events at what was the 94th Academy Awards ceremony. And opinion has been split.

Nottinghamshire Live reader, Natasha Lewis, said: "Never joke about someone's condition you will get slapped". While Adrian Irons said: "Will’s getting sent back to Bel-Air."

Adding to the conversation on the subject, Julie Dinky Merser said: "I say he did what he needed to in order to protect his family from anyone or anything that would threaten them and alopecia that's hardly a thing to make fun of especially for a woman Chris Rock shouldn't of belittled her in such a way."

Another reader, Zephyr, agreed saying: "I reckon Will Smith did exactly the right thing, after an insult to his Wife, Good on ya Will." With Nathan Lee Shaw, adding: "Paper beats rock".

However, Andrew Swift pointed out: "Anyone else would have been thrown out." And other Nottingham commentators weren't convinced by the outburst. Jonathan Storer "Yeah because that wasn't scripted at all". And Claire Onenonly Rudyj said: "Because it’s a publicity stunt…."

The Academy has said it “does not condone violence of any form” following an altercation during the 94th annual ceremony between best actor winner Will Smith and comedian Chris Rock.

Will Smith is not facing arrest after Rock declined to file a police report following an incident. A spokesman for Los Angeles Police Department said: “LAPD investigative entities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards programme,” an LAPD spokesperson told the PA news agency.

“The incident involved one individual slapping another. The individual involved has declined to file a police report. If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report.”

Ejaz Butt posted a picture of Will Smith in Men in Black using the memory eraser, writing " Will Smith making everyone forget what just happened when he goes on stage to accept his Oscar..."
