Nottingham pubs count the cost of damage after Leicester City fans' violence

Pub owners have been left counting the cost of damage after a Leicester City mob went on the rampage hours before the side were knocked out of the FA Cup by Nottingham Forest.

Tables, chairs and bottles were hurled at the windows of two Nottingham city centre pubs, while a smoke bomb was let off in the street.

Children were in tears after a violent attack on Fat Cat bar in Chapel Bar where families were having Sunday lunch around 12.15pm.

Harry Kohil, owner of Fat Cat, said: "The pub was busy with all the families we normally have on Sundays.

"It's uncalled for. They just walked past and started smashing the pub for no reason. I feel it was unnecessary to do what they did, whether they were football fans or hooligans.

"We've never had any trouble like this before. It's a family pub - it's got nothing to do with sports whatsoever.

"We are assessing the damage at the minute, finding out how much it's going to cost us. We've had a phone call with our insurers and are just waiting to hear back from them. They are fully aware of it as it was big news yesterday across everywhere.

The bar doesn't open on Mondays and Mr Kohil said it's likely to remain closed for the next two or three days.

"The last two years we've had in the industry [due to Covid], it's quite scary. We are glad there was no physical damage to our staff or our customers."

Mason Donn, a 29-year-old builder from Wilford, who was inside Fat Cat at the time said: "It was horrible.

"They launched chairs, bottles and tables at the windows.

“There were families inside, children crying. There were women, pensioners, families - just horrendous.

“They picked on a venue where it was quiet just to make a scene."

Three people suffered minor injuries outside the bar.

Violence erupted before the 4pm kick-off of the fourth round FA Cup match in which Leicester suffered a crushing 4-1 defeat at the hands of Forest.

In a second attack, pub staff at the Cross Keys, in Byard Lane, went outside to see off yobs who hurled tables and chairs at the windows at 3.20pm.

The crowd left after police dog handlers turned up at the scene.

Staff at at the pub didn't want to be interviewed but a spokesman for pub owners Great Northern Group said: "We're very disappointed in the behaviour of some Leicester City fans passing by the venue yesterday afternoon.

"Furniture was damaged and three windows smashed. The management and staff on duty acted on instinct and were incredibly brave and diffused the incident in a cool and calm manner showing professionalism and excellent de-escalation skills and we're incredibly proud of them.

"The venue was full of families enjoying our popular Sunday roast dinner service at the time and were shaken by the experience but did help the staff clear up and we're very grateful for that"

The pub is open today as usual.

Leicester City fans were denied entry to the Canalhouse, in Canal Street, after a smoke bomb was let off in the street.

Manager Wayne Harvey said: "The police had taken Leicester fans along the canal-side as they know venues along here are usually away-friendly. It must have been about 11.45am and we hadn't opened, we were just observing fans outside.

"One set off a smoke bomb on the road so we thought it was not a great idea to let them in."

One Leicester fan issued an apology in response to the video footage: "Sorry to see this - really embarrassing and unacceptable behaviour from a small group of our 'fans'."

One man who ran onto the pitch and threw punches at Forest players has been arrested.
