Nottingham neighbours happy 'dump' will be turned into new Lidl and 62 homes

Plans for a new Lidl and 62 new homes in Bestwood have been met with delight by local residents. The decision approving both applications was made on December 21.

The site was previously home to a former plastics factory, Chronos Richardson, off Arnold Road and Belconnen Road, which some neighbours have described as now looking like a “dump”. Many were happy to hear a new budget retailer was on its way.

Rebecca Cole, 28 who lives off Arnold Road, said: “There’s a Coop on Arnold Road but their prices are quite expensive so I’m glad there’ll be a Lidl in the area. As for the 62 new homes, I think people would rather see something done with it than have it look how it does now.”

The receptionist continued: “As you can see there’s an old mattress thrown onto here and other rubbish, it just doesn’t look nice. I’ll definitely be using the Lidl once it opens, it’s walking distance from my house.”

The old factory site has been vacant for more than 10 years. As part of the new development, there will be a car park providing 100 standard spaces, four disabled, nine parent and child and four with electric vehicle charging points. It has been previously reported that Tesco was against plans for a Lidl claiming that the site should be used for housing only.

Steph Mason, 33 lives in Bestwood. She said: “I think a new supermarket would be good, it would create jobs and nothing else is being done here, it looks like a dump.”

The full-time mum went on to say: “It’s a great place for homes if you walk away from a bus into town or a bus into Bulwell. The only thing that I could think of being a pain is living near such a busy road.”

John Roach, 66 is now retired. From Bulwell he said: “I think a Lidl would go down well here. There’s the Co-op but they’re too overpriced. It’s such a big bit of land, something needed to be done with it.”
