Nottingham neighbours 'devastated' as Top Valley social club up for sale

A community were left disappointed as a beloved social club where neighbours "shared so many memories" is now up for sale. It comes as the Top Valley Social Club on Potters Close has been put on the market on a freehold basis.

Long-term residents Joseph and Betty McEntree, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the venue six years ago, said they were "shocked" by the news. Mr McEntree, 77, added: "It is so sad. It would be a shame to see it go because we do not have pubs or anywhere else to meet up.

"I guess it depends on whether someone else will buy it and keep it running. But I can see it turned into houses.

"We are shocked because it means so much to this community. It is going to be a shock for regulars", he added.

"It is important to have venues like these here to keep the community together. We do not have anywhere else to go."

Mrs McEntree said "many will be devastated by this", adding: "We do not even have a supermarket here. It is just good to know that we have this venue next door in case of an emergency."

The 76-year-old added: "We have shared many memories there. We celebrated our 50th anniversary six years ago.

"People gather there after a funeral, it is used for all sort of things. Many will be devastated by this."

Christine Pearson, who also lives on Potters Close, 79, added: "The people who run it are so lovely.

"I sometimes hear the music from the venue." She giggled and adedd: "It is just nice because if you hear the music you know you are not dead".

"My son goes there regularly and he told me about this. We do not know if it is going to be turned into something else, maybe house - we will see.

"In a way it would be a shame to see it go. But equally, if it is turned into houses, it would still be good for the community."

The commercial property on Potters Close is a single storey purpose built property, of brick construction under a pitched tiled roof. It includes a car park, beer patio outside, and bar and entertainment amenities inside the building.

Ben Freckingham, has commented about the offer on behalf of Pepperdine and Frenckingham, adding: "We are open to any offers and we are not restricting the potential buyer to continue the business. If the right buyer makes an offer wanting to turn the business into something else, we would be open to that. The same applies if they want to keep it as a social club."

The owners of the Top Valley Social Club have declined to comment when approached by Nottinghamshire Live.
