Nottingham McDonald's boarded up days after closure

It's only been closed for five days but a Nottingham city centre branch of McDonald's is being boarded up. The fast food restaurant shut its doors in Exchange Walk for one final time on Friday (June 30) due to the lease expiring.

The boarded up property does little to enhance the area where numerous shops have closed on Lister Gate, Albert Street and Wheeler Gate. But at least it will protect the large glass windows on two sides of the property from being smashed. While it was still open one of the panes of glass had been damaged.

Staff from the restaurant have been redeployed to other branches in the city at Clumber Street, Victoria Centre and Angel Row. The Exchange Walk branch had been trading for 34 years. A passer-by said: "Every time I come into town it looks bleaker."

A number of empty shops on Lister Gate have murals in the windows in an attempt to brighten up the walkway.
