Nottingham Forest transfer window stance set out as Filippo Giraldi comment made

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper insists any discussions with recently-appointed sporting director Filippo Giraldi about January are on hold until the World Cup break.

The Reds signed 22 players in the summer as they prepared for life in the Premier League - albeit three of the new arrivals immediately headed out on loan. However, such an overhaul posed certain challenges, with a new-look group taking time to gel.

The winter transfer window is unlikely to be anywhere near as busy, but owner Evangelos Marinakis could still provide funds for further reinforcements as Forest try to secure survival. And an injury list which now features four defenders - including Giulian Biancone, who has been ruled out for the season - might also have an impact on January plans.

Moussa Niakhate remains some way off returning from a hamstring problem, with Cooper referring to an “inconclusive” time-frame of recovery. Omar Richards (hairline fracture of the leg) and Harry Toffolo (hamstring) are also sidelined.

Although the window is looming, the Reds boss says his full focus is currently on the three matches before the campaign pauses for six weeks. That starts with a home game against Brentford on Saturday as his team try to climb off the bottom of the table.

"We've not spoken about it, me and Filippo,” Cooper said, when quizzed on the window. “What we have spoken about is just focusing on these games and football.

"There is enough time (during the break). It's not as if it's only a week or two weeks, there's five weeks, in terms of the break.

"What Filippo and myself, and one or two others, have said is, ‘let's just focus on the phase we're in’, which is game phase. When that has a little break then there are some bridges we can cross then, in terms of what we may or may not do.

"We have said, 'listen, we know there is a transfer window coming up and we know there is a break, but at the moment, 100 percent focus needs to be on the remaining games’ - starting against Brentford. The only thing we're expecting at the moment is to commit to Brentford at the weekend.”
