Nottingham Forest transfer target urged to take ‘opportunity’ after rejected bid

Former Nottingham Forest loanee Max Lowe has been given an opportunity to stake his claim for a place in Sheffield United’s first team this season, after being denied a move back to the City Ground.

The 25-year-old left-back spent last season on loan with Forest, helping the team to gain promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs. Lowe was a second half substitute for the final against Huddersfield after recovering from a groin injury.

Forest were keen to make the loan move permanent in the January transfer window, but saw a bid of £2 million turned down by the Blades. Olympiacos, also owned by Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, saw a bid rejected this summer.

It is said that Sheffield United had set an asking price of £5 million. With that price not being met, Lowe has now been given an opportunity to impress Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom.

The defender has started the last two games in all competitions for the Blades, and is again expected to be in the starting line-up for tonight’s Championship clash against Sunderland. The game will see Lowe play a competitive match at Bramall Lane for the first time in over a year.

Ahead of the match, Heckingbottom said he guaranteed that Lowe would get an opportunity this season, a promise he is now delivering on. “Max got himself fit pre-season and is now getting an opportunity in the team,” he told the Star .

“I always told him I could guarantee him that: An opportunity.

“Every single one of the players here, without going into too much detail, have got things and aspects of their games that we want them to get better at. But, at the same time, Max brings a lot with him to the table and we’re looking forward to seeing him getting stronger and stronger.

“People will always get the chance here, they’ll always get opportunities and if they don’t make it or take then, it won’t be through anything we as a staff haven’t done in terms of driving them and giving them everything they need to perform,” the Sheffield United boss added. “That goes for every single one of them here.”
