Nottingham Forest transfer target 'opens talks' with Championship rivals

Nottingham Forest transfer target Kane Wilson has reportedly begun discussions with Championship rivals Bristol City. The wing-back has helped to guide Forest Green to the third tier for the first time in their history this season.

The 22-year-old was named League Two player of the season for his impressive performances at the New Lawn Stadium but has not signed a new deal at the club, meaning he will be available as a free transfer this summer.

He finished the campaign with 13 assists and three goals in 45 games. His aggressive, attacking style of play was a hallmark of Rob Edwards’ side and he has been linked with a move to the City Ground as Steve Cooper looks to make additions to his squad this summer.

But BristolLive report that Bristol City look to have stolen a march on the Reds by making the first move to sign the wing-back. They say that City have an excellent chance of signing Wilson due to their increased policy of fielding academy and younger players and moving away from a reliance on the transfer market which advertised them as an attractive option for up-and-coming talents looking to make the next step.

They also report that Wilson is also said to be well-settled and enjoys living in the West Country, while the Robins High Performance Centre is also proving a strong selling point for the club, especially in comparison with a number of their Championship rivals.

On Nottingham Forest's interest, they say that they have scouted him extensively however their interest is believed to be tied to how they fare in the play-offs.

Should they earn promotion to the Premier League, it’s not thought that Wilson will be an option for them. But should they remain in the Championship, with loanee Djed Spence expected to be sold by Middlesbrough to a top-flight club, then Wilson becomes an obvious possible replacement.

Birmingham City are also interested, with technical director Craig Gardner having worked with Wilson at the Baggies, while Forest Green have confirmed they are also in talks with their star man over extending his stay in Gloucestershire as they prepare for life in League One.
