Nottingham Forest transfer blow as rivals 'enter final negotiations' for free agent

Nottingham Forest look set to miss out on the signing of free agent Alexander Djiku, it is reported.

The defender had been on the lookout for a new challenge after leaving Strasbourg upon the expiration of his contract last month. Forest were reportedly facing competition from Lille, Villarreal and Fenerbahce.

The Reds had "put forward a proposal" as Steve Cooper looks to strengthen at the back this summer. According to L'Equipe, Forest and Fenerbahce were claimed to be in the "best position" to land the player.

It was claimed his next destination was between Forest and Fenerbahce. However, a report by Fussball Transfers (via Sport Witness) states that Djiku will be heading to Turkey.

That's because Fenerbahce "took pole position" after launching an offer. It adds that there is hope that a deal "could be finalised within the next few hours".

The Super Lig outfit "will enter the final negotiations" with the player's representatives. Djiku's former club Strasbourg also tried to tie the player to a new contract following Patrick Vieira's arrival, but the Ghanaian has opted to "live an experience abroad".

Forest are yet to sign new players this summer window. The only piece of business completed by the club has been striker Chris Wood whose loan turned into a permanent deal.
