Nottingham Forest loanee Alex Mighten has received praise for his performance for loan club Sheffield Wednesday as he helped them overcome Morecambe in the FA Cup.
The Owls were in action on Friday night as they looked to avoid a cup upset in the first round of the competition. It was a chance for Mighten to show what he can do after spending the last few weeks as an unused substitute.
And he took his chance with both hands. The 20-year-old scored his first goal for the club, since signing on a season-long loan from Forest in the summer, in a comfortable 2-0 win at Hillsborough.

But it wasn’t just his goal that impressed both his coaches and journalists, with his overall performance also earning praise. All of which have encouraging signs for the rest of the season.
“There were one or two players that needed 90 minutes. I thought Alex was good,” Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore said (via YorkshireLive ). “He grew into the game and we saw glimpses of what he can do. He has got wonderful feet and a change in direction.
“He is happy to go inside or out. For him to have got the goal came will have done him the world of good and it came at the right time for us. Mallik scored on Saturday and Alex scored tonight. The goal put us through into the second round.”
The Forest man’s performance scored eight out of ten in YorkshireLive’s player ratings with Wednesday correspondent Dom Howson writing: “Showed some footwork on a couple of occasions down the left flank. Caused Morecambe problems with his pace and direct style of play.
“Claimed his first goal for the club after a mix-up at the back from Morecambe. An encouraging showing.”
The Forest loanee was also namechecked by opposition manager Derek Adams in his post-match press conference. The Morecambe boss described him as a ‘quality player.’
The praise comes just weeks after Mighten’s performance against Leicester City U21s in the Papa John’s Trophy was described as ‘off the pace’. The improved performance, and the praise that has come with it will come as a boost to the loanee, one that he will hope to build on in the coming weeks.
