Nottingham Forest have 'already triggered' Newcastle transfer clause for Chris Wood

Nottingham Forest have already triggered an obligation to turn Chris Wood’s loan move from Newcastle United into a permanent transfer, according to reports.

The experienced striker joined the Reds just before the end of the January transfer window with a conditional obligation to buy in the summer based on appearances made. And according to The Times, that clause would be triggered if Wood made just three starts, which he has already done in the games against Bournemouth, Leeds United and Fulham.

As a result, the Reds will reportedly pay Newcastle £15million for the 31-year-old, who will sign a one-year contract. Wood cost the Magpies £25million when he arrived from Burnley in the 2022 January window.

It has been a quiet start to his Forest spell for Wood, with some fans preferring to see Sam Surridge in the starting line-up for Saturday’s home clash with Manchester City. Meanwhile, Reds legend Garry Birtles has urged the team to play to the targetman’s strengths.

“As any striker will tell you, you're beholden to supply,” the two-time European Cup winner told the Garibaldi Red Podcast last week. "We all know what his strengths are and what supply he needs. It's difficult coming in for him as he has with the way we play and the way we set up."

Another Newcastle player, Jonjo Shelvey, also joined the Reds in January while club captain Jamaal Lascelles has been linked with a return to the City Ground.
