Defence indefensible
Former Nottingham Forest midfielder Jermaine Jenas has said that his former club will be relegated from the Premier League this season, should they not improve their defensive performances at the City Ground.
After keeping a clean sheet in their 1-0 win over Liverpool in their last game at the City Ground, Forest conceded twice against Brentford. A last-gasp own goal from Mathias Jorgensen rescued a point for the Reds in a 2-2 draw.
A penalty from Bryan Mbeumo and a strike from Yoane Wissa put Forest at joint top of the most home goals conceded this season with 11. Steve Cooper ’s men have also faced a league-high 86 shots on target.
Lineker repeats criticism
Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker and pundit Jermaine Jenas are in agreement with Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper over four penalty decisions during the Reds’ Premier League encounter against Brentford.
Forest salvaged a point with a last-gasp equaliser in Saturday afternoon’s 2-2 draw at the City Ground. They did take the lead through Morgan Gibbs-White’s first goal for the club, but a controversial penalty was awarded to Brentford after a check by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), when there appeared to be minimal contact between Yoane Wissa and Dean Henderson.
It led to fury both in the stands and on the pitch from Forest, who themselves had three separate shouts for penalties, all of which were waved away. Cooper outlined his frustrations at the decisions after the game, as well as Gibbs-White saying Forest were 'cheated'.
'More controversy'
Nottingham Forest salvaged a point in what was a dramatic and incident-packed Premier League clash against Brentford on Saturday afternoon.
Forest went into the game knowing that all three points would lift them off the bottom of the table for at least a couple of hours ahead of Leicester City’s 5:30pm kick-off against Everton. They were on their way off the foot of the Premier League when Morgan Gibbs-White scored his first goal for the club in the 20th minute of the game.
But the big talking point of the clash came just before the half-time break when Dean Henderson was adjudged to have fouled Yohan Wissa. The penalty was given after a long VAR check, with Forest feeling hard done by after shouts of their own were waved away.
Lingard stance explained
Summer signing Jesse Lingard is yet to make the kind of impact he would have been aiming for at Nottingham Forest.
But contrary to reports, it is understood the Reds have not held discussions about his future ahead of the winter transfer window. It comes after the 29-year-old was linked with a January departure from the City Ground.
A report by TEAMtalk claimed Forest were “considering offloading” Lingard because he “does not figure in their long-term plans”. However, those suggestions are understood to be wide of the mark.
