Nottingham Forest's reported interest in signing Burnley forward Maxwel Cornet could be scuppered because the player apparently wants to be playing European football next season.
After winning promotion to the Premier League last season, the Reds, of course, cannot offer that immediately. The same, though, also goes for the other two clubs said to be interested, Championship champions Fulham, who are in the same scenario as Forest, and Everton, who have not played in Europe since 2017.
Whether West Ham United, who will play in the Europa Conference League, come in to meet the reported £17.5million release clause in Cornet's contract remains to be seen. Any of the teams set to play in the Europa League (Arsenal and Manchester United) or Champions League (Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur) coming in seems unlikely at this stage.

The Athletic understand that the player is "particularly keen" on playing for a club that can offer European football. Whether that is a viable option is another question entirely.
Cornet scored nine Premier League goals during his first season in England at Burnley and assisted another in the league, as well as one in the Carabao Cup third round against Rochdale. While a fine return for the 25-year-old in their first season after arriving in the top-flight from French side Lyon, spending £17.5m on the transfer fee appears to be putting off clubs for the time being, with The Athletic reporting that no club has yet met that figure.
