Nottingham Forest defender reveals injury update after World Cup heartbreak

Nottingham Forest central defender Moussa Niakhaté has revealed that his "recovery is going well" ahead of a returning to fitness next year.

The uncapped Senegalese defender was not named in the country's 26-man World Cup squad on Friday, having previously been called up by national team head coach Aliou Cissé in September, despite being injured, due to the hamstring issue that has sidelined the player since the second match of the Premier League season.

Niakhaté started the Reds ' opening game against Newcastle United and the following fixture at the City Ground against West Ham United but was forced off late on during the 1-0 win and has not featured again since. The player has now opened up on the "challenging" last few months on social media.

“The last months have been challenging for me, watching my teammates from the sidelines and not being able to battle with them on the field has been the hardest part,“ Niakhaté said in a three-tweet-long Twitter thread. “To all the Nottingham Forest fans and everyone that has written to me during my absence, I appreciate you all!“

“My recovery is going well, and I will be back stronger than ever in 2023. I also want to wish my brothers from Senegal all the best in Qatar. To the chosen 26, we are with you every step of the way! Go and live your childhood dreams and do our country proud! For everything, god decides - Alhamdulillah.“
