Nottingham Forest 'continuing' talks over next transfer after Newcastle defeat

Nottingham Forest are reportedly "continuing talks" with Belgian club Standard Liège over a loan move for winger Alex Mighten.

The 20-year-old made his Premier League debut as a late substitute during the defeat to Newcastle United last weekend, replacing summer signing Moussa Niakhaté as head coach Steve Cooper reacted to the hosts scoring their second of the afternoon at St James' Park through striker Callum Wilson with an attacking change.

Mighten found regular minutes hard to come by last season amid injury troubles and competition for places, starting just five Championship matches and often remaining as an unused substitute. The England under-20 international featured for just a single minute, in the semi-final first leg against Sheffield United, during the successful play-off campaign.

Following the Reds' subsequent promotion to the top flight, there has been debate about a loan move for the United States-born youngster. Earlier in the summer, Blackpool are understood to have enquired about the player's availability before turning their attention elsewhere.

Now transfer news journalist Ekrem Konur is reporting that talks are continuing with Standard over the 10-time Belgian champions signing Mighten on loan. Cooper spoke during pre-season about the player's performances.

"He's really impressed; 100 per cent he can play a part,” the Forest boss said. “We've been sharing the minutes around, and although he hasn't started, read nothing into that - we are loading up match minutes with training minutes and getting everyone to a physical level.

"He's been a real threat when he's been on the pitch. I'm pleased with him.

"I'm a huge fan of Alex, and long-term, will not let him down. I didn't give him enough minutes last year, for obvious reasons, and sometimes including he had bad luck with injuries.

"But we have drawn a line under that. He's come back looking good. And he's one of us, isn't he?”
