Nottingham Forest ace Morgan Gibbs-White on his ‘connection’ with Man City’s Phil Foden

Morgan Gibbs-White is dreaming of joining great mate Phil Foden in the senior England squad.

The Nottingham Forest ace is closing in on that goal after a fine first season at the City Ground. He has already received plenty of international recognition in his career, having been part of the under-17 squad that won the World Cup in 2017.

Six years on, he is a regular in the under-21 team and will captain his country against France in Leicester today. At 23, he is a senior member of the squad. There is only one rung left to climb and Gareth Southgate has confirmed Gibbs-White is in his thoughts.

When that calls come, he will join one of his best mates in Foden, who has asked Gibbs-White to be godfather to his children.

“It’s an honour I’ve even been mentioned [for the senior squad] and it shows I’m improving on the right path. I have to strive for more,” said Gibbs-White, reported The Sun.

“I’m still in touch with Phil, still really close. I’m godparent to his kids. It just shows that anything is possible. I was in that Under-17 World Cup team so if those guys can do it, so can I.”

On his relationship with Foden, Gibbs-White added: “We just had a good connection. I met him at 16, we just got on. We roomed together quite a bit. He’s always been a nice kid, Phil.

“He’s an unbelievable player. He’d play Fortnite until one or two o’clock in the morning every night! Every night.

“I’d tell him that if he scored the next day then he could stay on it for another couple of hours!”
