Nottingham ‘explosion’: Fire breaks out at plant with asbestos as locals warned away

A huge fire has broken out at a recycling centre which contains asbestos at an industrial estate.

Firefighters in Dunkirk, Nottinghamshire have issued an asbestos warning as 12 crews tackle the blaze in the Lenton area, while local police are assisting with road closures.

A firefighter at the scene told Nottinghamshire Live: "It's all asbestos in there. They won't let you in."

Nearby residents have been urged to close their doors and windows.

Cliff Kirby, a Boots worker who lives in Beeston, sent his drone up for an overhead look.

He said: "The main fire you can see burning through the building. It's a decent-sized fire."

In a statement, a Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman, added: "We currently have 12 appliances in attendance at a recycling fire in the Lenton area.

"Smoke can be seen from a distance away so we urge local residents, or anyone who can see or smell smoke, to close doors and windows. Abbeyfield Road is currently closed so please avoid the area."

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue later tweeted: "We are likely to be dealing with this incident in Lenton for some time.

"Please avoid the area and shut your doors or windows if you see or smell smoke."

“Once the fire has been extinguished there will be a full investigation into its cause.”

A spokesperson for Nottingham Recycling said: “A fire was discovered at Nottingham Recycling’s facility in Abbeyfield Road, Nottingham, earlier this afternoon.

"The Fire Service attended very quickly and have worked tirelessly since then to tackle the fire. At the time of this statement, they remain on site.

“Thankfully there have been no injuries caused by the fire.

"A total of 11 people are employed at the facility, all of whom have been accounted for and are being looked after.

"The facility principally recycles corrugated cardboard."

The network management for Nottingham City Council has urged people to avoid the area.

In a statement, it said: "A large fire on Abbeyfield Road is causing thick smoke to cover parts of the Highway Network.

"Please slow down, close windows and if possible avoid the area."

It added, "minor delays are expected".

Nottingham Travelwise, the city council's traffic monitoring site, tweeted to say: "There is a fire ongoing on Queen's Drive A453 close to the junction with Clifton Boulevard A52 Traffic is not currently affected however please be aware and further updates to follow."

It was at least the third fire of its kind to have broken out at an industrial estate in the area in the past year.

On November 28 of last year, firefighters tackled a huge blaze at a metal recycling plant at the Lenton Industrial Estate in Nottingham overnight.

A dozen fire engines from Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire were at the scene overnight, while the Fire Service urged people to continue to avoid the area and be wary of high volumes of smoke.

And on May 7 last year, more than a dozen fire engines attended an industrial blaze in Harrimans Lane, in the Dunkirk area of Nottingham.

Damien West, area manager for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, said firefighters were faced with a "rapidly developing fire" but that there had been no reported injuries.
