Nottingham Castle to stage four-day jubilee garden party

Nottingham Castle is busy preparing an event fit for the Queen to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee. A four-day garden party with fun for all the family will be taking place next month.

Building on the success of its Easter Weekender festival, which broke castle visitor records with thousands through the gate, the Jubilee Garden Party will run from Thursday June 2 to Sunday June 5, from 10am to 4pm, with all entertainment and activities included in the general admission price.

The jewel in the crown of the weekend will take place on Friday and Saturday with a magical performance of Alice in Wonderland: The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party in the historic bandstand. In addition, there will be an exciting roster of live music from 11am onwards, with artists and performers including the Steel Drum Band, soulful Nottingham-based Sadé Eboné and Nottingham Samba Collective.

All four days will feature unique open-air installations, craft and flag-making workshops for all ages and face painting – alongside all the fascinating collections on permanent display within the castle galleries.

Entrance to the festival will be included as part of the general admission with a discount for Nottingham residents in postcodes NG1 to NG16, plus other ticket options as outlined on the website. Timed entry to Robin Hood Adventures is also included in the price as well as a last chance to access the temporary exhibition entitled Laura Knight & Caroline Walker: A Female Gaze before it ends on Sunday June. 5.

David Johns, interim CEO at Nottingham Castle Trust, said: “The Easter Weekender was a huge success so we’re anticipating similarly high demand for this fantastic Jubilee Garden Party. As well as marking the Platinum Jubilee, we’ll be celebrating the upcoming Commonwealth Games with colours adorning the tree-lined pathways to create the perfect photo backdrop. With good weather forecast, we hope people will join us to get comfortable in our deckchairs while picnicking and enjoying some brilliant live music and family-friendly entertainment.”

This is the first of the castle’s royal celebrations following the announcement that it will be visited by the Queen’s Baton Relay on Sunday 10 July. For further information and to book tickets visit nottinghamcastle.org.uk
