Nottingham baker 'lucky' after heavy rainfall flooded some units at Sneinton Market

A Nottingham baker has spoken of his luck after his business escaped being seriously damaged by flooding. Heavy rainfall in Nottingham on Tuesday, July 11, left part of Sneinton Market temporarily submerged, with footage showing water cascading off the units and forming a stream that covered the pavement.

Shortly after Bryan Henesey, owner of Breadmill Bakery in the market, filmed the scene, he had the frightening realisation that the water had started to get into his new recently-opened artisan bakery. But even after hours of removing water and cleaning, Mr Henesey said he had been fortunate.

"As far as I know I have got quite lucky, it is not too bad. It was mostly just having to suck up an inch or two of water, mop up and make sure all my electrics were okay.

"I think it was just the drains being clogged up by two big downpours today - outside you couldn't see the paving because it was all underwater. It all cleared after about 10-15 minutes but unfortunately it still meant water had got into my bakery. It took two or three hours to clear up but, touch wood, it's not too bad."

A neighbouring business in the market was also flooded, but Mr Henesey said the rest of the premises appeared to escape the worst of the flooding. He explained Breadmill Bakery would be able to open as normal on Wednesday (July 12).

Rain also lashed down in Nottinghamshire over the weekend, with High Road, between Chilwell and Beeston, flooding again. Mr Henesey, who lives in Chilwell, said he feared he would come home to more flooding after cleaning his bakery.

"I had visions of coming home to my house being flooded after my business was, but my house is alright. All my appliances seem to be working and I've bought myself a chip butty to refuel for tomorrow - so it could be worse."
