Man charged with attempted murder of mother stabbed at Notting Hill Carnival while with her child

A man has been charged with attempted murder after a mother was stabbed in front of her young child at Notting Hill Carnival.

The 32-year-old woman was left fighting for her life after being caught in the middle of a fight while attending the event on Sunday.

She was stabbed on Golborne Road shortly before 6pm after police believe she was caught up in the middle of an altercation between two groups of men.

The Metropolitan Police previously said in a statement that it is not yet clear if they were known to her.

The unnamed mother remained in critical condition on Wednesday morning.

Shakiel Thibou, 20, of Masbro Road in West Kensington, was arrested at a home in Hammersmith and Fulham on Tuesday morning.

He was charged in the early hours of Wednesday with attempted murder, violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon, the Met Police said.

Two of Thibou’s brothers have also been charged in relation to the same incident.

Sheldon Thibou, 24, of Star Road in West Kensington, has been charged with violent disorder, possession of a stun gun and assaulting an emergency worker.

Shaeim Thibou, 22, of Charleville Road in West Kensington, was also charged with violent disorder and assaulting an emergency worker.

All three have been remanded to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning.

Commander Charmain Brenyah, the Met’s spokesperson for Notting Hill Carnival, said on Tuesday: “Our thoughts, first and foremost, are with the woman who is fighting for her life in hospital and with her loved ones.

“She came to Carnival to have fun, with her young child, and was caught up in the most awful violence.

“These arrests are a significant step in the investigation. They are the result of a determined effort by detectives who have worked around the clock to identify, locate and arrest these suspects.

“We should not underestimate how much more difficult those vital early stages of an investigation are when they take place in the context of a busy, crowded event like Carnival.

“I’d also like to acknowledge the incredible work of the officers, including police medics, who arrived so quickly - delivering emergency medical treatment and securing the scene to preserve vital evidence.

“Our investigations into the other incidents over the weekend continue.”

Another man, Kamar Williams, 33, has been charged with murder in connection with the stabbing of 53-year-old Derek Thomas last month, after being arrested by officers at the carnival on Monday, the force said.

There were five stabbings at the carnival on Monday and an incident involving a corrosive substance, the Met said, with two of the stabbing victims also left in a critical condition.

A 41-year-old man was also left in critical condition after suffering head injuries near Queensway station following the event.

Police made 349 arrests over the weekend, including 72 for possession of an offensive weapon, 53 for assault on an emergency worker, and 53 for possession of class B drugs.

There were 61 instances where officers were assaulted, the Metropolitan Police said.

The weekend saw eight stabbings at Notting Hill Carnival.
