In 2019, the devastating fire that engulfed Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris led to the iconic spire collapsing in a moment that was both emotional and recognizable. President Emmanuel Macron recently visited the cathedral, specifically stopping at the framework of the transept crossing where the new spire now stands.
Rebuild Notre Dame oversaw the reconstruction of the oak frameworks and lead roofing of the nave, choir, and transept to replicate the originals. These restored areas provided the foundation for the rebuilding of the iconic spire.
The original spire, designed by architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century, stood at 96 meters tall before succumbing to the fire. Its replacement was installed and unveiled last year after the removal of scaffolding.
Notably, the new design of the roof above the transept crossing incorporates modern fireproofing features. The Elysee Palace highlighted the inclusion of two-stop fire trusses to prevent the spread of fire between different roof sections and a security hub for efficient communication of critical information.
