A notorious Mexican drug lord, Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, has been removed from the U.S. and handed over to authorities in Mexico. Cárdenas Guillén, 57, was transferred to Mexican law enforcement after serving 14 years in U.S. custody for his involvement in a bloodthirsty cartel.
Upon his arrival in Mexico, Cárdenas Guillén was immediately re-arrested and taken to the country's top maximum-security Altiplano prison near Mexico City. Mexican authorities have charged him with crimes related to drugs, organized crime, money-laundering, homicide, and illegal possession of a firearm.
ICE confirmed that Cárdenas Guillén, also known as 'El Mata Amigos,' was once a feared figure in Mexico for his violent reputation. He led the Gulf cartel and later founded the Zetas, a notorious gang of hitmen responsible for numerous brutal acts of violence, including mass killings and decapitations.
Cárdenas Guillén was captured in 2003 and extradited to the U.S. in 2007. In 2010, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for various charges, including threatening federal agents and operating a criminal enterprise that generated millions of dollars.
His deportation to Mexico marks the latest chapter in the ongoing efforts to bring him to justice for his crimes. The authorities on both sides of the border are working together to ensure that Cárdenas Guillén faces the consequences of his actions and is held accountable for the harm he has caused.
