It may seem too early to be talking about Easter things, but life has taught me the best things sell out early because they’ve generally been in store since January.
My latest discovery – and it’s a very good one – is Waitrose’s Hot Honey Hatchlings, £6/3. They really missed a trick and should have made them in the shape of bunnies and called them Hot Honey Bunnies. Silly them.
In reality, they are three little duckling shapes made of its No 1 single origin Dominican Republic 65% dark chocolate and then filled with Mexican honey caramel and a touch of chilli powder. The effect is delicious. The chilli is warming but not ouchy.
Dare I say this is the perfect thing to eat if you have a cold? The chocolate helps soothe your throat and the chilli is just enough to warm up those sinuses, plus, you know: honey. And the chocolate is a perfect yin to the yang (or vice versa) of the innards. I really want to say one is the perfect amount, for these are not cheap. But the truth is I ate two: one after breakfast and one after lunch and there’s not a soul alive that can say I don’t dedicate myself to this job.
Chocolarder has made its Easter eggs in smaller sizes this year which is a great idea, all in eco packaging. They are £12 each and in three flavours, 50% milk hot cross bun flavour (not for me), 40% blond chocolate with pieces of shortbread (very nice) and 65% dark with fruit and nuts. This last was my favourite: a glorious blend of deliciousness and just the right amount of everything. A struggle not to eat it all in one go.
