Norway announces death of King Harald, Europe’s oldest monarch

  • King Harald V of Norway has died at the age of 89 after more than 35 years on the throne, the Royal Palace has announced.
  • The monarch passed away at Oslo National Hospital after his health drastically deteriorated following a bacterial blood infection.
  • Crown Prince Haakon, aged 53, who has been serving as regent during his father's illness, succeeds him to the throne.
  • King Harald became Europe's oldest reigning monarch following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, to whom he was a second cousin.
  • Known for his popularity, he famously broke royal tradition by marrying commoner Sonja Haraldsen in 1968 and later championed LGBT rights and refugees.
